"The Garden of Earthly Delights,", un tableau de Jérôme Bosch a inspiré Marjolein Dallinga

Marjolein Dallinga tells us:

I have always created and collected objects. An irrepressible desire to build and an insatiable curiosity for the world around me.

I have always played with and made dolls.

The Napoleon Bourassa Exhibition Centre invited me to collaborate on an exhibition, and they showed particular enthusiasm for the many dolls I have created over the past five years.

I took on the challenge of creating the installation "The Garden of Earthly Delights."

This collection of works follows an exhibition I presented ten years ago at a textile museum in Italy, inspired by Hieronymus Bosch's 15th-century painting, "The Garden of Earthly Delights."

The idea came to me because my doll collection suddenly reminded me of this painting.

For this exhibition, I created different environments for each doll, organized around four themes.

  • The Garden, representing nature and spirituality. A place we are all a part of and that we all desire.

  • The Circus, representing "homo ludens," the playful human being, play as a cultural phenomenon, the lightness of life, joy, fulfillment, and entertainment.

  • The Laboratory, representing the place where we experiment, research, collect, preserve, and teach.

  • The Casa, or Home, representing the place where we live, hide, feel safe, and build relationships. We enjoy being together, but we also yearn for our own space.

I started making dolls again after my mother passed away in 2020.

The first dolls were inspired by an old piece I had left in the forest. Over the years, the dolls have changed shape and color, and each figure has become an expression of feelings and emotions I've devoted many hours to writing about. They have transformed into raw, naked figures, without masks or clothing to conceal themselves.

While preparing this exhibition, I suddenly perceived a connection with drawings, paintings, and sculptures I've created over the past thirty years, since moving to Canada.

Some of these works are integrated into this installation, while others were created specifically for this event.

I worked with immense joy on creating this entire exhibition.
